Project Overview: Goal 2

According to research, the professional community of educators is trained to work with children and do not receive sufficient training and information on effective means of engaging parents in their child’s education. VISTA members will engage the professional community as well as stakeholders and potential collaborators in the community resulting in the establishment of a School Readiness Task Force that will develop and implement a plan to increase parent involvement and school readiness in the community.

Activities: What are the action steps needed to accomplish this goal?

  • Educators and stakeholders will be identified and contacted by the VISTA member
  • Meetings and phone calls will be held with educators and stakeholders to identify current efforts to increase parent involvement and school readiness as well as gaps in service which could become possible collaborations.
  • VISTA members will “plug into” current efforts and activities and support parent involvement and school readiness efforts by recruiting volunteers, distributing information within the agency and to parents, and participating in events or ongoing activities.
  • Educators and stakeholders will be presented with the HIPPY model of parent involvement and school readiness through information sessions or presentations at meetings.
  • Educators and stakeholders will be asked to sign on as members of a School Readiness Task Force and asked to identify resources they bring to the effort, activities they commit to and time frames for delivery.
  • The School Readiness Task Force and the group of parent leaders will be brought together to develop a plan to ensure School Readiness and Parent Involvement in the target community.
