Project Overview: Goal 1

According to host agencies, the communities targeted are in need of increased involvement by parents of young children in order for children to enter school ready to succeed. VISTA members will engage parents in the community in school readiness activities in order for children to enter school ready to succeed.

Activities:

  • Develop materials for parents to inform them of the importance of parent involvement and school readiness.
  • Deliver workshops / information sessions for parents to learn how to prepare their children for school, and the benefits of being involved in their child’s education.
  • Secure individual parents’ commitment to become involved in their child’s school, and prepare their younger children for school.
  • Identify parent leaders to reach out to, support and motivate their peers in becoming more involved in their child’s education at home and at school through volunteering and other activities.

Results:

  • Output: Materials developed and tailored to each community and delivered to 500 parents.
  • Output: (Performance Measure) Parents will participate in workshops / information sessions to learn how to prepare their children for school, and the benefits of being involved in their child’s education.
    • Indicator: Number of workshops for parents
    • Target: 3 parent meetings in each host community
    • Instruments: VISTA member will collect an attendance roster which will be entered into a database maintained at the project site.
  • Intermediate Outcome: 150 parents will commit to become involved in their child’s school, and prepare their younger children for school by signing a parent commitment outlining their action steps.
    • End Outcome (Performance Measure) Parent leaders will be identified and trained to reach out to and support their peers to become more involved in their child’s education at home and at school.
    • Indicator: number of parent leaders identified and trained
    • Target: 25 parent leaders
    • Instruments: 75% of parent leaders will report an increased understanding of parent involvement and school readiness strategies.
